Dark Horse Vineyard, BC 2016 Red Meritage $60.00
Vibrant dark fruits, spice, vanilla, and some toasty notes on the nose. The palate is a complex mix of dark fruits, sweet vanilla, some 
pleasant earthiness with subtle tobacco and spice. The tannins are silky smooth, and the acid is in perfect balance with the wine. This is a full-bodied red that has a long finish.
White Wine of the Year
Wild Goose Vineyards and Winery, BC 2020 Gewürztraminer $20.69
This Gewürztraminer has fairly pronounced aromas of rose, gala apple, yellow grapefruit, fresh baked apple pie, ginger and crushed gravel. This is an off-dry, medium bodied wine with medium+ acidity. The palate offers rose, ginger, apricot, baked apple and baking spice with a long finish.
Cider of the Year
West Avenue Cider, ON 2015 Northern Lights $56.00
This Cognac barrel-aged ice cider is just about the greatest ice cider I have ever tasted. It’s extremely rare and made with frozen heritage apples, barrel fermented and aged. It pours a dark golden colour and has a heady nose of baked apples, brown sugar, caramel, baking spices and rich, mature aromas that swirl and intensify as you stick your nose in the glass. I poured this for friends and watched their faces light up as we sat on the back patio late at night and enjoyed with hand-made fruit tarts. They could not believe what they were drinking. It’s rich, hedonistic and lavish on the palate and tasted of warm and spicy apple pie and cinnamon that is honey sweet but nicely balanced and in a perfectly mature state. So decadent.

Dessert Wine of the Year
Peller Estates Winery, ON 2019 Andrew Peller Signature Series Riesling Icewine $89.85
The tender Riesling grapes for this Icewine were picked in Niagara-on-the-Lake when the temperature first dipped to -10°C. After each grape was pressed while still frozen to release its individual drop of pure extract, the juices were fermented at a cool temperature to retain fruit concentration before aging in stainless steel tanks. This wine's fruit flavours of orange, nectarine and lemon drop make it a wonderful choice for mixing with vodka into an Icewine Martini. It's also delicious with rich paté, foie gras, creamy blue cheeses, manchego and aged Canadian cheddar. With the dessert course, it's a natural match for lemon pound cake, apple strudel, pineapple upside cake and poached pears.

It is a fabulous blend of Pinot Meunier, Gamay Noir and the traditional grape, Pinot Noir. This wine was made in the classic sparkling wine method to retain the fruitiness of the grape varieties. The wine displays fresh melon and berry flavours followed by a smooth creamy palate and crisp finish. It is complementary to a wide range of foods and occasions. Serve chilled.

Triumvirate, an ancient Roman term referring to three Emperors ruling together for balanced government, is a blend of three Bordeaux grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a classic “Meritage” and is a “right bank” Bordeaux style blend as it leads with Merlot. We call this one “The Snob” because it is made in the old-world style with a proper cork and all the acids and tannins in place to give it the bones to lie down in your cellar easily. This classic technique gives the nose a slight floral lift and softens the pepper note ever so slightly.

The 2019 Border Vines is a dry, medium to full-bodied red wine with a medium ruby colour, and is our go-to for a versatile red wine with good depth, complexity of flavours and structure. Notes of cherry, raspberry and tomato leaf leap out of the glass on the nose. On the palate, this wine is mouth-filling with fantastic weight and good acidity to balance. The nose is complemented with flavours of cassis, sour cherries, vanilla and oregano. Malbec shines through a little more this year, along with the distinct floral notes of Petit Verdot. Excellent length and concentration of flavours in this vintage make it approachable straightaway.

Wine Basket #7 - “Rose All Day”
Calling Blushing Beaver "food-friendly" is sort of like calling ketchup "burger-friendly," but in this case, it's not totally wrong. Blushing Beaver falls in between the extremes of red and white - less intense than a big, tannic, mouth-busting red, but with more depth than a super-light white. Just make sure you give it 
time to chill before drinking (like you would with a white wine). It's the perfect barbecue wine, the perfect beach wine, and the perfect picnic wine, but it's also the perfect sitting-around-watching-TV wine.

On the nose, this scarlet beauty hosts aromas of ripe summer berries with hints of delicate rose petal. The palate shows a bone dry mouthfeel that finishes with an array of very ripe dark fruit. This velvety Rosé can stand up to summer bbq's of chicken or pork. Try a fruit based sauce to compliment the berry nuance in the wine.

A premium block of Merlot was crushed directly to the press, given minimal skin contact, then pressed and blended with small portions of juice drained (saignée) during cold soak from blocks of Merlot (74%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), Syrah (8%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Pinot Noir (3%). Fermented cool in stainless steel leaving a small amount of residual sugar (11 g/L) remaining, for an off-dry finish.

The 2019 Contraband Syrah truly showcases the excellence of the Bartsch vineyard. This is a medium to full-bodied red wine with a deep ruby colour in the glass. The nose is very rich with notes of dark chocolate, raspberries and cinnamon. The palate follows up with an incredible concentration of flavours and texture. Dark cherry, leather and hints of dried fruit, along with a lovely oak integration, velvety tannin structure and very long finish make this wine the quintessential fireplace wine (though we are quite sure we will not be waiting for winter to enjoy). Our 2019 Contraband Syrah drinks well now, but will continue to evolve nicely in the bottle if cellared over the next seven to ten years.

A pretty red hue, viscous in texture and body and lovely on the palate. Aromatically lots of strawberry jam, coffee, orange zest and chocolate. It coats your mouth as you take your initial sip but there is the right amount of natural acidity and sweetness to lift it and bring across an elegance in the finish. When you sip the wine you definitely taste those characteristics in that order but something about how the wine finishes on a mocha note really pleases me on how it turned out after sitting in barrel for a few months. Pair this Icewine with chicken liver terrine, blue cheese, dark chocolate, strawberry crumble, galettes, crepes, icecream or even put a splash of it in your Brut for colour, sweetness and flavour.
