Guest Speakers – Bob Bird
Born in Belleville in 1937, Bob recapped his life living on a farm in Rednersville before joining the RCAF in 1954 at age 17. Home on leave, Bob starting dating Lois whom he had known since grade 5 but never quite got along until then. They were married in 1957 and were was posted to Germany in 1959 with a young son and a daughter on the way. Lois did not enjoy the voyage overseas. They were stationed in Germany for 4 years during the building of the Berlin Wall and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
He left the RCAF in 1965 and went to work for IBM. He worked on implementing Management Information Systems at 85 Canadian Forces. He rose up to management level and looked after clients in Toronto. Bob retired from IBM in 1992 and moved to Prince Edward County and set up his own software company.
Fulling a promise to his late cousin, Bob sold his company and took over three family run grocery stores. He ran that successfully; the stores in Stirling, Frankford and Havelock instituting new management practices and profitability. After 10 years he turned the company back over to his cousin's, now 25 years old, son.
Bob Bird joined the Rotary Club of Picton in 2004.
