Generators for Ukraine

     The need to support the people of Ukraine has not diminished. In 2024, we have joined with the Municipality of Prince Edward to work on projects as part of their Friendship Agreement with the City of Krasyliv, Ukraine.

     As the Sponsoring Organization and Chair of the Prince Edward County Friendship City Working Group (WG), we have been working on a solution to an urgent request from Mayor of Krasyliv, Ukraine, Nila Ostrovska, about obtaining small generators for use in schools and shelters ahead of the winter months. The Krasyliv region of 29,000 people has 39 schools who regularly conduct classes in bomb shelters with minimal power supply.

     The urgency of this need was highlighted by Russian drone and missile strikes in western Ukraine October 15, 2026. The main target was the city of Rivne which is a main source of power generation for the region. Krasyliv is 170 km south of Rivne and lost power for a considerable amount of time due to these strikes.

     We  discovered that Rotary had several projects that are providing power supply solutions for the citizens of this stricken country. In cooperation with the Rotary Intercountry Committee (ICC) Canada-Ukraine and ICC Sweden-Ukraine, we can order small generators for direct delivery to Krasyliv.

     The Rotary Club of Picton is contributing $5000 to this campaign. We hope the community can get us to the goal quickly. The campaign will be on going as the need never seems to end. We will continued to purchase and ship generators as the funds become available. 

Launch Event - June 29, 2026
On June 29, 2026, the Municipality of Prince Edward held the Krasyliv City Friendship Project and Fundraising Launch. The Club's Past President, Don Leslie, as Chair of the Municipal Working Group, was the emcee for the event. 
 
President JJ Johnston presented a cheque of $3000 to Mayor Steve Ferguson at the event to support the friendship project.

Christmas Card Campaign - December 2025
 
The County of Prince Edward is kicking kicked off the Friendship City Agreement with the Krasylivka Urban Territorial Community in Ukraine. The municipality has established Friendship City Working Group to implement the community-based aspects of the agreement. The working group has joined with the Rotary Club of Picton to advance these efforts, the first of which is a Christmas card campaign.


"As the war in Ukraine enters its fourth winter with no end in sight, it's more important than ever to demonstrate our support and solidarity for the Ukrainian people," Mayor Steve Ferguson says. "I am pleased that Prince Edward County has deepened its special relationship with the Krasylivka Urban Territorial Community through this friendship agreement. The Christmas card campaign, supported by our amazing volunteers, is a wonderful way to brighten the season for the people of Krasyliv."

 
County residents wrote messages and signed Christmas cards collaboratively designed by local artist Laurie Scott and Krasyliv Friendship City Working Group member Roxanne Mackenzie. The working group sent 492 cards to Krasyliv community members including students in the city.

This inaugural act of friendly community exchange and outreach is a great opportunity for the community to join the working group in establishing the first of many efforts to engage in opportunities that include culture, education and youth services engagement.
